The book Mokum* can be seen as an alternative guide for the city of Amsterdam. We developed 5 typefaces derived from vintage posters in the Netherlands for each chapter in the book, to categorize the different ways you can see a city: a “Liberty City”, a “Monumental City”, a “Devotional City”, a “Protest City” and a “Cappuccino City”. In the backgrounds, you see several Parool covers from their archives: from the liberation in 1945 to the murder of Theo van Gogh. Sixty different contributors – amongst who you can find artists, writers, photographers and architects – from different parts of the world made this book, revealing different and unusual parts of the city that we believe is among the free-est in the world.
